A loan of $1,600 helped to buy chicken feed and fabric.

Rubí Asuncion Del Carmen's story

The Madres Alegres lending group meets every two weeks in the Rocafuerte settlement of the city of Limon. Here, most of the people are farmers and the locals are known nationwide for the delicious candies they prepare.

Rubi lives here. She is 47 years old, married, and has three adult children on their own. Her husband is a teacher.

Rubi learned to make clothing at a local school a few years ago. She set up her own workshop at her mother’s house with the aim of generating her own income and taking advantage of her knowledge of clothing manufacture. She makes all sorts of clothing for men, women, and children and takes orders from customers. She also raises and sells chickens, which provides a very good income so that she can get ahead.

She will use the money from this loan to buy chicken feed, fabric and sewing supplies. She has been with the lending group from the beginning and she likes it because of the help with the loans. Her dream is to have a larger workshop.
