A loan of $275 helped to purchase a mobile phone, solar charging set and a weighing scale.

Miriam's story

Miriam is 28 years old and is married with four children. She earns her income through the sale of crops and livestock, and she receives a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools. On her land, Miriam grows beans, coffee, vegetables, sweet potatoes and bananas. She also has cows, goats and chickens.

Miriam has served as a CKW for the last two years, and she looks forward to renewing her CKW contract for the next three years.

As a CKW, she will use the materials in her business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of her village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money she will earn as a CKW, Miriam will buy more land to farm on. Her biggest dream in life is to become a model and influential farmer in her community.
