Lerida Mercedes's story

Lerida lives in Santo Domingo. She is 42 years old, single, and has been in a common law marriage for many years. She and her husband have six children, four of them adults and two who live at home and attend the local school.

Her husband is working as a laborer on a farm but doesn’t have steady work. Sometimes he also works as a mason. Lerida wants to help get the family ahead, and is a hardworking woman and sets up her cart in front of a store near her home and sells salchipapas and hamburgers. In the mornings she makes bread to sell in the neighborhood. This has provided her an income to bring home and provide food and an education to her children. They have also been able to build their humble home little by little.

Lerida has been working with Fundación Alternativa and has had three loans in the past. She is very grateful that she has been able to improve her business. She is very happy because the money will allow her to buy potatoes, cooking oil, sausages, flour, butter, and everything she needs to make her products.
