A loan of $425 helped a member to purchase clothing.

Gnokolon Group's story

GNOKOLON is a group of the association DANAYA de KANGARE. It comprises four women who know one another through ties of kinship and community. They average 25 years of age. Married with an average of three children, they run different businesses, such as buying and selling cosmetics, rice and clothing, just like YAH, who is the second person standing at the left in the photo. The women live in large traditional families in KANGARE, in the sub-prefecture of SELINGUE, Région de SIKASSO (Republic of Mali).

They have been in small-scale businesses for several years and are much in demand in their businesses. Concerned about satisfying the growing needs of their customers, the group members decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso loan program and are now on their first solidarity loan.

YAH intends to use her loan to purchase 10 lengths of Wax 'pagnes' (the colorful cloth of western Africa) and 5 lengths of damask fabrics. She gets her supplies from Bamako and locally from wholesalers, and she sells her products retail in KANGARE to a customer base composed of men and women paying in cash or on credit.

She is hoping for a monthly profit of 15,000 francs CFA that will enable her to pay back the loan and reinvest in her business.

In this group: Yah, Fatoumata, Mariam , Natenin
