A loan of $850 helped to increase stock for her salon.

Marcela Guilherme's story

Marcela Guilherme C. is a native of Maputo. She is 26 years old, married, and the mother of three. The children are 2, 5, and 8 years old, and the oldest is in third grade. Marcela supports four people and lives in her own house.

Marcela studied through 7th grade and then did not continue because she could not afford to pay for her studies. She was born and raised by her parents for 8 years, at which point they got divorced and she had to live with her stepmother. Live became very hard; very early on she had to work to provide for herself.

Marcela has been in business for more than 8 years, and she has two employees. Her salon is open from 8am to 7pm. She learned this trade by being a hair salon employee for two years. In addition to selling beauty products and services, she sells some basic necessities. Among these, peanuts sales are big; she sells them for 10 meticais (MZN) per cup (five cups make up one kilogram).

Marcela makes 1,500 MZN per day and saves 5,000 MZN per month. This is her first loan from Hluvuku (Kiva’s Field Partner). She learned about Hluvuku by talking with friends who were already clients. Her big dream is to have a vehicle to facilitate buying and selling supplies for her business.
