Cristina Esperanza's story

The Crédito 20 de Abril group meets every fortnight in Montecristi Canton, which is known for its rich pre-colonial culture and its nationally and internationally renowned handicrafts. It is the home of the famous straw hats. It is here that group member Cristina lives. She is 63 years of age, married and has 5 grown-up children, one of whom still lives at home. Her husband works for the local council. Cristina is a housewife who, as means of having an income of her own with which to help her husband cover the household expenses, sells clothing, shoes and Avon products (beauty products, cosmetics, perfume and women's accessories). She sells her goods from door to door for two to three hours a day, three days a week. She leaves goods with her customers on credit and makes collections every eight days. She has been running the business for 2 years and it is doing very well, her most-sold items being perfume and cosmetics. She will use this loan to buy clothing, shoes, perfume, creams and cosmetics. This is her fourth loan from the credit group which she likes because it is easy to make her repayments. Her dream is to own her own boutique.
