Carlota Del Carmen's story

Carlota is 53 and never went to school, as her father died when she was young and her mother brought her up alone. She is married and her husband works in agriculture. She has four children, two of whom are married and two of whom still live with her, along with her nephew.

Carlota has worked in farming since she was 12 and was taught by her father. He always used to tell her that she should learn to work so that if anything bad happened to her husband she would be able to look after the children. Later, she married a man who had always done the same work as her, so together were able to provide for their children, who have all completed their baccalaureate.

Carlota wakes up at 4:30 am to prepare breakfast and get the children ready for school. Then she drives to where her husband works, where she works for 6 hours before returning home.

The loan will be used to buy supplies for planting 7.5 km2 of maize on irrigated land. She will buy a bag of seed, 6 sacks of fertiliser, 2 litres of pesticide and the rest will be spent on manual labour.

Her goal is to pay back the loan and to have opportunities. She dreams of seeing her 11-year-old son and 12-year-old nephew graduate university, and she would love to buy some land and build a house.
