These fourteen women formed a group called Huikap Ningthou SHG to uplift them financially and economically. Ibetombi, with her hand raised, is the featured member of this group. She lives in Imphal East, which is 25 kms away from the city of Imphal in the Northeastern region of India. She takes care of and lives with her three daughters since her husband passed away. She is the sole income earner for the family.

Ibetombi used to make handmade mattresses. Since she could not afford to buy yarn, her customer paid for the yarn and she got only the making charges. It was very difficult to sustain the family with just a meager amount of income. Therefore, to access this loan she joined the group. With her first loan back in 2010 she bought yarn and started weaving traditional women's wrap-around skirts. She weaves and sells the products in the market town. She taught her daughters to weave as well and now they are also engaged in full-time weaving activities.

From her second loan onwards, she was able to put aside savings from her earnings. She is very happy that she is doing well for the family and managing to cover the family's necessary expenditures. Now she has requested another loan to increase her inventory to sell. She wishes to weave the most desired and expensive wrap-around skirts with the third loan. Likewise, the rest of the group members have requested another loan to continue with their weaving activities.

About WSDS-Initiate
WSDS-Initiate is an inclusive nonprofit that works with women across all tribes and minority communities in Manipur, located in the remote northeast region of India. Most organizations concentrate their work in the plains region of Manipur, but WSDS is among the very few organizations serving women in the isolated hills. Political unrest and frequent economic blockades in the area make it very difficult to provide services, resulting in Manipur having the lowest penetration of financial services in the country.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
