A loan of $800 helped a member to buy a variety of products.

Benkan Group's story

Benkan is a group of women who live in the Hamdallaye district of Koutiala. They know each other well and live in large traditional families with their husbands, children and other relatives. They average 31 years of age, are married and have at least three children each.

The Benkan group buys and sells a variety of products such as condiments, vegetables, soaps, flour, etc. In order to expand their business volumes, the members decided to join Soro Yiriwaso's loan program and are on their eighth group loan.

Martha, who is a member of the group, is on the far right of the photo. She sells a variety of products: condiments, soaps, sugar, tea and smoked fish. She is planning to use her loan to boost her working capital so that she enhance her stock of high quality products. She gets these products in Koutiala and sells them on a retail basis and for cash, at home or at the market, to a diverse customer base.

While the other members of the Benkan group expect to make an average monthly profit each of 120,000FCFA over the cycle, Martha expects to make 145,000FCFA.

Apart from repaying their loans, the group uses part of its income to cover personal expenses and expand their businesses. The women in this group would like to strengthen their partnership with Soro Yiriwaso so that their stocks are not depleted.

In this group: Martha, Sanata, Fatoumata, Awa, Assetou
