A loan of $600 helped a member to buy cooking ingredients at wholesale prices, including rice, palm oil, and tomatoes.

Fullah Group's story

Fatmata is the featured leader of this group of entrepreneurs. Fatmata was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital city, forty-four years ago. She is married to a trader, and the couple has four children, who are attending primary and secondary schools. Fatmata sells cooked food.

The members of the “Fullah” group have applied for a loan of 500,000 Sierra Leonean Leones (SLL) for each, from SMT/ Kiva lenders. With the help of this loan, each will be able to expand her business, both in terms of quality and size.

Featured leader Fatmata, for example, will use her share of the loan to buy cooking ingredients at wholesale, in order to stop buying these items at retail. These items include ingredients like rice, palm oil (the country’s most popular cooking oil), tomatoes, onions, and fish. By buying ingredients at wholesale, she will cook more food at a lower cost, and make more profit.
