A loan helped a member to purchase and stock yarn and thread for weaving.

Lungset Lom Group's story

Living her life as a refugee because of ethnic clashes since 1995, Hatneithem lives in a village which is about 45 kms from the main town of Imphal. The other group members also live in the same village. Hatneithem is the featured borrower member for the Lungset Group and she is pictured with her hand raised. Starting a new life after the ethnic clashes was not easy; financial insecurity paralysed their life. Her husband and she have geared up together to start a new beginning and work very hard, encouraging one another.

Hatneithem is a weaver. She weaves different designs of woven clothes for both women and men. At the beginning, she used to ask the customers to bring their own yarn/thread for weaving, and she usually gets paid for the labour charge only. She did not have the option to purchase yarns and thread for the customers as she did not have financial resources. After she joined the Lungset group, Hatneithem was able to purchase her choice of yarn and thread and makes more profit than before. The generated income is meager and is insufficient to manage the family expenses.

With the Kiva loan, Hatneithem will purchase yarn and thread to stock and start weaving. With sufficient supply of yarns and thread, one can manage to weave, making woven clothes for both men and women, which is a very good source to generate income. Hatneithem is glad that, with the help of the loan, she will be able to continue the weaving business and also manage the family financial expenses with the generated income. Her only wish is to give good education to her kids so they will be able to stand on their own feet and become successful academically.

Hatneithem says “Thank you, Kiva!” The support and unending co-operation is hoped for and the group will also abide and practice the good message that Kiva is doing. The rest of the group members are engaged in piggery, cattle rearing, weaving and petty businesses.
