A loan of $1,475 helped a member to purchase more items like betel nut/leaf, cigarettes, bar soap, candies and many kinds of chips to sell.

Bethel Shg Group's story

These hard-working women have called themselves by the group name “Bethel”. They all live in Bishnupur which is in the state of Manipur, Northeastern region of India. They formed a group with an aim to generate income for themselves by accessing a loan.

Rumunhoi is one of the six members of the group and is pictured with her hand raised. She is 33 years old and has one daughter. Her husband is in the army. Rumunhoi opened a 'pan' shop near the market area. With the loan amount she wishes to expand and refill the shop by buying varieties of chips in packets, cigarettes, and betel leaf/nut which are in demand. She believes that her shop will be a source of generating income for the family instead of her being fully dependent on her husband’s salary. Her daughter is studying in grade one, and she wishes to send her daughter to good schools in the future to receive quality education.

Likewise, the rest of the group members also aspire to raise their economic, financial and living standards by generating more income. Some of the group members do chives cultivation, weaving or have 'pan' shops.
