A loan of $6,000 helped a member to buy a small generator.

Ghufran's Group's story

Ghufran is an Iraqi mother. She is 36 years old and married, with four children.

With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Ghufran is one of the many Iraqi woman who work from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

She has 12 years' experience with using her sewing skills, making dresses for women and children and small fabric household items based on custom orders.

It might be surprising to see the number women engaged in this type of income generating activity; as simple and ordinary as it might seem, it is indeed a significant step for stay-at-home mothers to be engaged in such activities.

And the next step for Ghufran is to improve her work conditions, having recognized the importance of proper time management and quality services being delivered in a timely fashion. Her work has been often interrupted by power cuts in her town, and the unpredictability of the cuts made planning the work even more difficult.

To avoid these difficulties she would like to buy a small generator. To be able to make the purchase, she took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
