A loan helped to purchase inventory to launch her cosmetics business.

Amanda's story

As a single mother, Amanda sought a way to be financially independent while being able to spend time with her two-year-old daughter as well. She recently learned of microlending from a friend and decided to apply for a loan in order to sell Mary Kay skincare products. The added flexibility in running her own business gave her freedom that a nine-to-five job would not allow.

“I chose to work with Mary Kay in particular because they believe in giving back to the community,” Amanda said. “Some of the revenue helps abused wives and underprivileged youth. That is very important to me.”

For Amanda, helping clients select the correct skin care products is very rewarding, as she knows that they can help a person take greater pride in their appearance. She has had success in her sales thus far and takes pride in empowering the women who purchase her products. By hosting “skincare parties” throughout the area, Amanda is able to attract new clients, while bringing women together in a relaxed setting.

Amanda will use her $800 Kiva loan to purchase inventory for her skincare line. She will also allocate a portion of the funds to host her own website.

Looking to the future, Amanda hopes that her new business will continue to grow and help provide for her daughter.
