Sokunthea, a mother of two small children, resides in Moung Russey district of Battambang province. She is 28 years old and a farmer who does rice cropping as the primary source of income. During her spare time, she also works for others for a fee to supplement her income. Sokunthea has engaged in her current business for several years and currently she is able to earn up to 32,000 KHR per day.

With VisionFund (Kiva’s partner), this is the third loan for Sokunthea and one of her co-borrowers and the seventh-cycle loan for the remaining two borrowers in the group. Sokunthea has made a successful repayment for her past two cycles which has helped her to uplift her living condition gradually. Now, she and her co-borrowers are seeking for 1,400,000 KHR each. As the leader, she will spend her entire loan portion to buy 10 sacks of fertilizer and rice seeds to be ready for replanting reason. She hopes that she can gain a good yield from her crop so that she can double her income.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
