María Cecilia's story

The Madre Para Un Futuro Mejor [Mothers for a Better Future] Communal Bank meets twice a month in the May 24th Canton in Manabí Province. This area is famous for beautiful landscapes and forests; great variety of wildlife; and kindhearted, hardworking farmers and ranchers. Doña María, age 53, and her husband, a construction worker, live here. The couple has three children: two adults and a 12-year-old son who attends middle school. One of the older children is a daughter and mother of two young children, who all live with Doña María and her husband.

Doña María is a very industrious woman who enjoys working so she can help her husband, who doesn't earn much, meet the couple's household expenses. Doña María sells all types of shoes and clothing, and also prepares lunches for delivery as well as hayacas, a typical, delicious regional dish made of meat in a cornmeal dough and wrapped plantain leaves. Doña María is applying for a loan to purchase clothing, shoes, and supplies for preparing food. She has been a member of the Communal Bank for six years and is satisfied because loans have allowed her to improve her life. Doña María's ambition is for her children to complete their studies.
