A loan of $6,000 helped a member to buy a new sewing machine and a small generator.

Ebtisam's Group's story

Ebtisam is a young Iraqi woman. She is 27 years old, married, and a mother of 2 children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Ebtisam is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income, and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Similarly to many women in her area that is still considered to be a conflict zone, she learned her skills at a young age and has gained 10 years of experience in making dresses for women and children, and in making smaller fabric household items. Many women started their small scale business activities like this, responding to the lack of goods in the area.

Ebtisam would like to make her home based sewing workshop a little more productive with improved equipment and an improved work scheduler. She would like to buy a new sewing machine with functions that will allow her to work with better quality materials newly available in her area; she would also like to buy a small generator that will allow her to better plan and manage her work time without the constant interruptions caused by frequent power cuts in her area due to lack of infrastructure.

To be able to make these purchases, Ebtisam is taking a group loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients, and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
