Shandirai's story

Shandirai is a 19-year-old single young woman living in Hurungwe District in Zimbabwe. She volunteers as a Learner Guide in schools, teaching students life skills as a part of their education. The Learner Guides program is run by Camfed and supports children’s learning and academic acheivement. She currently operates a grocery shop where she sells food such as cooking oil, sugar, salt, mealie-meal (maize flour), sugar beans, matemba (sardines), biscuits, sweets, and stationery. Shandirai inspires young women in her community as an entrepreneur. She has been running her business for two years and has managed to employ one person during that time. Shandirai intends to use the Kiva loan to expand her business by increasing her supplies. She hopes to grow the business and increase its profitability to better provide for her family’s needs and for the needs of vulnerable children in the community.
