A loan of $275 helped to purchase a mobile phone, a solar charging set and a weighing scale to provide vital farming information to her community.

Catherine's story

Catherine is 38 years old and is married with four children. She earns her income through the sale of crops and livestock and earns a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools.

On her land, Catherine grows maize, beans, peanuts, cassava, bananas and coffee. She also has goats and cows. As a CKW, Catherine will use the materials in her business-in-a-box (a smartphone, a solar charging set and a weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to other members of her village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money she will earn as a CKW, Catherine will pay school fees for her children. Her biggest dream is to provide her children with a good education.
