A loan of $275 helped to purchase a mobile phone, solar charging set and weighing scale so that he may provide vital farming information to his community.

Richard's story

Richard is 45 years old and is married with six children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock, and earns a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area, including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools.

On his land Richard grows maize, beans and coffee. He also has cows, goats and chickens. As a CKW Richard will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (a smartphone, a solar charging set, and a weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes.

With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Richard will invest in buying new agricultural tools. His biggest dream in life is to have a sustainable source of income.
