Ana Carmela
Ana, 35 years old, is a mother of two children and lives in a common law marriage with her partner. Approximately 6 years ago, she began her own beauty salon with which she has generated income to sustain the basic needs of the household and to provide education to her children. She came to learn this trade thanks to her mother, who has a beauty salon located in a city on the Caribbean coast. Her first job she had as an independent was with hair straighteners, as an in-home service; but due to family difficulties she had to stop this work, as she didn't have anyone with whom to leave the children to care for them while she worked. For this reason she decided to start a beauty salon in her home. There she provides services and generates economic resources, while caring for her children. Today she needs a loan to invest in the purchase of fixed assets (tables, mirrors, hair dressing chairs, washing stations, etc.). In this way she will be able to improve working conditions and also be able to provide better convenience to her customers, which will increase her income from the services that increase in the Christmas season. Ana wants to continue her trade and making a business that will be prosperous and competitive, so that she can generate reliable and stable income for her family that will give her the opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life and well being at the side of those that she loves.

More information about this loan

By funding this loan, you are promoting entrepreneurship in remote regions, including areas recovering from guerilla warfare in Colombia, and helping to reverse the rural exodus which occurred in the past decades when a the rural population fled their countryside homes for the safer cities.

This Kiva loan was created by Kiva's field partner Interactuar specifically for Kiva funding, in an effort to reach more borrowers in rural areas. Most of the Interactuar's lending operations are focused in urban parts of Medellin. But this loan product is designed to provide working capital to riskier agricultural businesses who have been traditionally excluded from the finance sector.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
