A loan of $3,500 helped a member to buy pigs and animal feed.

Nuevo Porvenir (Cuenca) Group's story

Nuevo Porvenir loan group is made up of nine women who live in the area of Cumbe Parish in Cuenca. This parish has a cold climate and is surrounded by mountains that grant it beautiful landscapes and fertile land. The people there are friendly and kind, and they still preserve the culture and traditions of their communities.

One of the members of this group is María Dolores, 31, who has been with Nuevo Porvenir for a year. During this time she has established friendships with all the members and the loans have helped her with the household budget.

María Dolores is the single mother of three children, ages 10, 7, and 3. Her oldest two children attend school in the town. María Dolores devotes herself to taking care of her children, who are still young, but she works in agriculture to have her own income. She sells her harvest and also uses it for family consumption. She also raises guinea pigs and pigs, and makes crafts out of agave.

With the money from the loan she's going to buy pigs and animal feed.

María Dolores's dream is to travel to the United States.
