Kanou Group's story

The women of the Kanou Group have an average age of 44 years and 5 children. They all live with in traditional extended families in Tamaro in the San Cercle of the fourth administrative region of Mali. These women are related and conduct their businesses by buying and selling food products. After having successfully repaid their previous loans, the women of the Kanou Group are now on their fourth group loan.

Ms. Awa is the seated at the right of the photo. She intends to use this loan to buy 100kg of smoked fish, 5kg of onions and 2 cartons of Maggi cubes. She sells her goods within the San Cercle to a clientele of both women and men, sometimes in cash but often on credit. She plans to make an average monthly profit of 35,000 FCFA to be used on a variety of health-, food-, clothing-, and school-related expenses. The rest will be reinvested in her business.
