A loan of $750 helped to buy fruits, pulses and vegetables.

María Magdalena's story

The communal bank "Jardín de la Artesanía" meets every 15 days in the Montecristi Canton, known for its rich pre-colonial culture and craft work on both a national and international level. The place is also known for its famous straw hat.

This is where María, 45, lives. She is married and has four children, ages 24, 22, 14 and 3. The youngest ones attend school and kindergarten. Three of the children still live at home. Her husband is a merchant.

María is a good wife and is taking out the loan to help her husband with his work. He has a stand at the city market where he sells fruits and vegetables. He works from 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. In the early morning hours he goes to the wholesale market to buy products so he can offer his daily customers the best he can. He has been in business for over 25 years and it has earned him enough to provide for his family in a dignified way.

This loan is to buy fruits, pulses and vegetables. María has been in the communal bank since the beginning and she likes how helpful the loans are. Her dream is to have her own grocery store.
