Sofia's story

Sofía is 62 years old. She is a widow and has two adult children who now have families of their own. She has her own house and lives next to her two children, who help her out with the household expenses. Sofía makes a living from sewing, which she does in her home. She has been sewing for 40 years now and has based her whole life on this business, using to it bring up and educate her children. In the last 3 years she has also been selling fruit and sweets. She works on her own because these days there is not sufficient demand for her to need to employ anyone else.

What Sofía likes about her work is that it allows her to do something she enjoys and she also has free time to rest and do other things in the house. The business is going well for her since she has customers who always come to her to sort out their clothing problems. For now she only wants to be able to provide for herself, as she has no plans in the short term.

This will be her fifth loan with Kiva. Sofía is grateful for the financial support she is getting in order to keep making progress and she promises to pay her loan instalments punctually. With the requested sum of 2000 soles she will buy sewing materials such as fabric, thread, needles and other items.
