Sokunthea is 38 years old and a widowed mother who needs to support three schoolchildren. To sustain her living, she does rice farming, sells grocery items and raises cows and pigs as the main sources of income. She has been involved in her current businesses for more than 10 years.

This is the second loan for Sokunthea with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner). She is seeking a new loan to support her son who wants to continue working toward his bachelor degree, majoring in Civil Engineering. Thus, this loan portion will cover the entire tuition fees for this son. She hopes that he will get a good job after he graduates.

More information about this loan

This loan is part of VisionFund Cambodia’s higher education program, designed to provide financing to students in poor households who otherwise lack the financial support to continue their studies. Very few students have the financial resources necessary to go to college. VisionFund Cambodia has designed a lower-interest rate loan product for students, given the financial benefits associated with financing this loan upfront on Kiva. It is disbursed to the borrower in annual installments.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
