A loan of $800 helped to buy provisions, water, juices and fizzy drinks.

Alberto Gonzalo's story

The La Pila communal bank meets every fortnight at the public fountain in the canton of Montecristi. This place is very well known in the province and the country for its rich traditional culture. A wide range of crafts can be found which are made by the locals following traditional customs. Alberto, who is 66 years old, lives here. He is married and he and his wife have 6 children who are independent adults. His wife is a housewife and helps him in his business.

In order for them get on in life and seeing that his beloved wife doesn't have as much strength now for working, Alberto started up a small business a year ago to sell empanadas, "corviche" [a fish and banana dish] and tortillas made by his wife, as well as juices, fizzy drinks and sweets. By doing this they are able to earn some money and get by in life doing decent work and not having to depend on anyone.

This loan is to buy provisions, water, juices and fizzy drinks. Alberto has been in the communal bank for more than 4 years and likes it because it helps them to get on in life. His dream is to have good health.
