A loan of $600 helped to buy supplies for her coffee farming business.

Maria Leocadia's story

Doña María Leocadia is an enterprising woman with a strong drive to get ahead in the world. She is 57 years old and can count on a solid marriage for support. She has 5 children, 4 of whom are married and live away, with only one daughter still at home. She left school after the fourth grade and even that was tough given the pressing need for all hands at home and the few options for schooling then available.

Doña María and her husband are farmers. Her fields are 5 kilometers from her house and she can only get there on foot. Her children help when they can, but farming is exhausting and too much for her sometimes. Doña María is applying to the COMIXMUL cooperative for a loan that she use to buy the supplies she needs--fertilizers, manure, weed-killers, etc.--for her next coffee crop. The investment will allow her to buy the supplies she needs to carry on the business and grow more coffee. The more coffee she grows, the more income she will generate to support and provide for her family.
