João Cris&oac's story

João Crisóstomo A. is 53 years old. He was born and raised in Inhambane. He is married and the father of 6 children with ages between 7 and 24. The oldest is working in neighboring South Africa. His second is in his 1st year of college, and the younger ones are in general education. João moved to Namaacha, a town bordering with Swaziland and concluded his course of agronomy (middle level).

In 1977 João began working in the Agrarian School of Namaacha as a professor, and in the following year he was married to his wife. He worked in that school for only 4 years and was transferred to the District Direction of Education of Namaacha where he worked as a permanent official occupying the function of Technician of Production and School Food.

He earned a salary of 4,500MT but was unable to save any money due to the elevated cost of living. João currently lives with his family in a house given up to the services and is building his own home in the same district. Besides his family, João is responsible for his orphaned nephew that lives in Inhambane. He sends him 500MT on a monthly basis.

To begin his work João first received a loan from the International Bank of Mozambique (BIM) for 16,000MT and paid it off after 2 years. In 2007 he came to know Hluvuku through some coleagues and solicited a loan for 8,000MT which he used to purchase construction materials. This is the second loan with Hluvuku and the first through Kiva for 9,000MT which will be used to the same end. In the future he intends to ask for another loan so he can furnish his home and construct a wall.
