A loan of $275 helped to purchase a mobile phone, solar charging set, and weighing scale so that he may provide vital farming information to his community.

Acema's story

Acema is 41 years old, married, and has two children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock. He also earns a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases, and agricultural tools.

On his land, Acema grows cassava, bananas, cabbages, and vegetables. He also raises chickens. Acema has served as a CKW for the last two years and he looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (a smartphone, a solar charging set, and a weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Acema will buy some goats for his farm. His biggest dream is to be a model farmer in his community.
