David's story

David is 27 years old, married, and has two children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock. He also receives a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases, and agricultural tools.

On his land, David grows maize, beans, peanuts, bananas, sweet potatoes, and cassava. He also raises chickens and pigs. David has served as a CKW for the last two years, and he looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, he will invest in his farm by building a pig sty and chicken house for his livestock. His biggest dream is to work his way out of poverty so that he can help others to do the same.
