Fred's story

Fred is 47 years old and married with six children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock and he receives monthly compensation as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area, including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools.

On his land Fred grows maize and cassava. He also has chickens and fish. Fred has served as a CKW for the last two years, and he looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Fred will buy more fish for his farm. His biggest dream in life is to buy a water pump for his land so that he can irrigate his crops properly and earn enough money to provide for his family.
