A loan of $275 helped to purchase a mobile phone, solar charging set, and a weighing scale, so that he may provide vital farming information to his community.

David's story

David is 35 years old and married with five children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock and he receives a monthly compensation as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area. This includes information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools.

David grows maize, beans, and cassava on his loan. He also has goats, chickens and pigs. David has served as a CKW for the last two years, and he looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes.

With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, David will pay school fees for his children. His biggest dream in life is to become a commercial farmer so that he can raise his family's living standards.
