Ramanzani's story

Ramanzani is 31 years old and married with three children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock and he receives a monthly wage as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases and agricultural tools.

Ramanzani also has a small business. On his land Ramanzani grows maize, beans, coffee, bananas, avocados and cassava. He also has goats, chicken and fish. Ramanzani has served as a CKW for the last two years, and he looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, which will help them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Ramanzani will invest in his business. His biggest dream in life is to grow his farm so that he is able to employ others.
