A loan of $1,075 helped to buy in bulk replacement parts for refrigeration equipment.

Clemente's story

Clemente owns a cold storage depot in a district in the south-west of the city, where he lives with his family. He has 32 years' experience which he acquired when working for a general electricity company. He received training in refrigeration so he could offer excellent service to the company's customers. During his time there, he acquired technical and production know-how and he has now managed to capitalise on this in his own revenue-generating business. In his cold storage depot he offers a maintenance service for equipment, such as air conditioning and fridges, and a repair service for machinery such as washing machines. His working day begins at 8 in the morning and ends at 5 in the afternoon. He buys his spare parts from specialised dealers so that he has good quality parts which allow him to produce better work. He is currently applying for a Kiva loan (his second through the Mario Santo Domingo Foundation) which he will use to buy the most commonly needed spare parts for refrigeration equipment and which will enable him to respond more quickly to his customers' demands. Using his loan from the Foundation he has already managed to perform better and plans to continue this improvement process, using the grant and his up-to-date technical skills, to beat off competitors (his greatest challenge), as his knowledge is progressing in leaps and bounds.
