A loan of $500 helped to obtain a water pump for irrigation.

Kennedy's story

Kennedy is a farmer from Chibombo District, Zambia. He is asking for a Kiva loan so that he may purchase a water pump to irrigate and expand his garden.

A father of seven, Kennedy has been selling tomatoes, fresh greens, and local eggplants from his garden for over five years. He has been able to sell his produce at major markets in the capital city of Lusaka where he can fetch a good price. Kennedy has so far managed to water his small garden, carrying water in buckets from a nearby well. Kennedy hopes to expand his garden and production, but without a water pump he has been unable to do so.

Water pumps can be a major boost for small farmers such as Kennedy, who often struggle to expand to their potential while irrigating their crops with buckets. A water pump allows farmers to water their crops more regularly while also increasing the area they are able to cultivate. Unfortunately, the upfront costs of such a water pump can be very prohibitive. Once he secures a loan, Kennedy will be able to get a water pump from Rent-to-Own, which will deliver the equipment to his farm, as well as provide training on how to use and maintain it.

Kennedy believes the water pump will help him realize his plans to expand his farm, and increase his profits. It is for this reason Kennedy is asking Kiva lenders to assist him with a loan so that he can secure a water pump.
