A loan of $350 helped to buy beehives and apiary materials for honey production.

Francis's story

Francis lives in a small town in Kwale county. Kwale county is located on the Kenyan coast near the border of Tanzania. While beekeeping has not historically been a major activity in the region, the mangrove swamps closer to the coast and large passion fruit farms inland provide bees with robust sources of nectar. Though most farmers in the area are new to beekeeping, many are very enthusiastic about it. Francis is married and has three children. Both he and his wife have been farming for six years, and they currently have an orange plantation. Francis is looking forward to bee keeping as it promises to be a good source of income. This is Francis’ first loan, and he intends to use the income generated from bee keeping to expand his cultivated land. Francis hopes to establish a commercial apiary in the future.
