A loan of $375 helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Monica's story

Mónica is 35 years old, is married to 41-year-old Alejandro, and has a 9-year-old daughter with whom she lives in a house she owns. She has made a living from agriculture for more than 16 years on a piece of land she bought with her husband, and this work is their primary means for sustaining their small family. She has a total of 3 hectares with cacao and fruit trees that she works in an expert manner with the solid support of her husband. When she was starting this business, she didn't have a lot of money to use as capital because she was young. However, having a very dedicated working partner to count on allowed her to overcome many obstacles.

Her daily work consists of doing maintenance work and caring for her cacao crops, as this is indispensable in ensuring that she will obtain quality fruits at the harvest. This is why she must invest in each planting, hiring day workers who help her to clear the weeds and other undergrowth from her crops, and also fertilizing the lands that she cultivates with bird droppings and other natural fertilizers. One of her primary long-term objectives is to have better earnings to acquire more parcels of land and to increase her production to benefit her family's budget.

This is her first loan with Kiva and she feels grateful for the financial support she is receiving to keep moving forward. She also commits to making her payments in a punctual manner. At this time she would like to have 1,000 Peruvian nuevos soles to buy organic fertilizer.
