Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

Abu's story

Abu is 30 years old and lives in the town of Iganga in the region of Uganda. He is married and has 2 children, with 1 of them currently in school. For the past 3 years, Abu has been working hard to manage his retail shop, which sells sugar, salt and other foodstuffs.

To help expand his business, Abu has requested a loan of 2,500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase a new refrigerator, and will help Abu to generate greater profits, hence sustain family members. Abu hopes that in the future he will be able to to increase profits.

Abu is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Abu who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
