A loan of $1,900 helped a member to buy vegetables.

Kelegna (Union) Group's story

Kelegna is a group of women from the Sincina district of Koutialia who know each other well and live in extended traditional families with their husbands, children and other relatives. They have an average age of 38, are married and have an average of 6 children each. This group of women sells various items like fruit and vegetables, fabrics, beauty products and prepared food. The members decided to join the Soro Yiriwaso loan program in order to increase the size of their businesses and are on their 7th group loan. Lalaicha is a member of the Kelegna group. She is the one wearing the blood red damask outfit in the picture and she sells tubers, fruits and vegetables. She plans to use her loan to buy bags of vegetables (potatoes, peppers and yams). She will get her supplies in Koutiala and the surrounding area. She makes her sales, for cash, at her home and at the market to a diverse retail clientèle. Whereas the other members of the Kelegna group expect to make an average monthly profit of 135 000 francs each during this loan cycle, Lalaicha expects to make an average monthly profit of 160 000 francs. The group members use part of their income to cover their daily expenses and part of it to increase their working capital, as well as to repay their loans.
