A loan of $700 helped a member to buy a large quantity of ingredients to cook achekeh to sell.

Women Of Progress Group's story

Meet the members of the “Women of Progress” group from Waterloo, a small town in western Sierra Leone. They are all local entrepreneurs who have come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a loan of 500,000 SLL apiece. With the help of this loan they hope to expand their respective businesses, make more sales, and consequently improve their living conditions.

Wendy is the featured leader of this group. The 39-year-old is married to an “okada driver” (motorbike taxi driver) and they have 3 children together. Wendy has been a businesswoman for many years now; she sells “achekeh” (food made from cassava roots). With her share of this loan, she will buy a large quantity of ingredients in order to cook a larger amount of achekeh to sell.
