12 De Abril (Cuenca) Group's story

The 'Sociedad 12 de Abril' [April 12th Association] loan group is formed by twelve women who work and have stalls in a city market where each day is a new struggle to overcome. Their common objective is to get ahead and to provide their families with a promising future, while still preserving their culture and traditions. The women live in the city of Cuenca, known as Santa Ana de los Cuatro Ríos. Since December 1999 it has been a World Heritage Site. It has a cold climate and a beauty that charms everyone who visits.

One of the members of this group is Encarnación. She is a founding member of the 'Sociedad 12 de Abril' loan group, and is very good friends with all of the group members, with whom she shares the responsibility for various group activities. She lives in a beautiful area of the city of Cuenca.

Encarnación is 79 years old. She has nine adult children from her marriage, some of whom are already married and live independently. Her unmarried children work and help her financially. She doesn't have a house of her own and rents her home.

Encarnación makes a living by selling fruits and vegetables in her area. She works from 7 o'clock in the morning without a specific end time, as everything depends on the day's sales. She is going to invest the money from the loan in buying fruits and vegetables to stock her business. Her dream is to preserve her health and to keep growing in her business.
