Pablo is a 26 year-old farmer who has had to take care of his mother from a very young age. His father died, and so he had to take over the responsibility of the household. At this time, Pablo is requesting a loan to invest in pigs to raise and fatten, so that he can increase his livestock and take advantage of the space that he has available on his farm. In this way he will be able to satisfy the demand, which will increase in the coming Christmas season, and thereby increase the income that he receives from his work.

Pablo es un campesino de 26 años de edad, que desde muy joven tuvo que hacerse cargo de su madre, pues su padre falleció y él tomó las riendas del hogar. Se dedica a las labores agropecuarias, cría y engorde de animales y producción de leche, pues posee 27 cerdos, 2 vacas productoras de leche y 15 pollos, esta actividad la realiza en la finca arrendada en la que vive con su mamá y su pequeña hija de 4 años de edad. Para generar los recursos económicos necesarios para el sostenimiento de su familia, él vende los cerdos en diferentes carnicerías y, los pollos y la leche que produce las vende entre los vecinos del municipio donde reside. El empuje, la dedicación y el amor a su familia lo motivan para salir adelante, sobrepasando todas las dificultades y los desafíos que se le presentan. Actualmente solicita el crédito para invertirlo en la compra de lechones para cría y engorde, con el fin de abastecerse y aprovechar el espacio que tiene disponible en la finca, de esta forma podrá satisfacer la demanda que aumenta en la temporada navideña que se aproxima y así podrá incrementar los ingresos que recibe por su labor. This Kiva loan was created by Kiva's field partner Interactuar specifically for Kiva funding, in an effort to reach more borrowers in rural areas. Most of the Interactuar's lending operations are focused in urban parts of Medellin. But this loan product is designed to provide working capital to riskier agricultural businesses who have been traditionally excluded from the finance sector.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
