A loan of $700 helped fix her car, which she uses for work.

Maria Leticia's story

María is 23 years old and was born in the Sigchos canton near Latacunga, which is in the Cotopaxi province in Ecuador. She is single and thanks to the help of her parents, she was able to graduate secondary school. Due to difficult financial circumstances, she had to move to the city. For this reason, she currently lives in the Estación area of the city of Latacunga.

María works as an assistant in a store in the city center and lives with the store owner. In her free time, she knits chalinas (traditional shawls), scarves, and quilts and then sells them as an additional source of income. She is very skilled, enterprising, and hardworking. She goes throughout the city and also outside of the city to sell her goods and give security to her customers.

María recently lost a child after 5 months of pregnancy due to health issues, but despite this María has not given up and strives every day to get ahead. She hopes to look out for the safety and wellbeing of her family. She learned to knit from her mother, who in turn learned it when she was young and has passed it on from generation to generation.

María obtained a second-hand car which is very useful for getting from one place to another. Unfortunately, though, it has broken down due to being used so much. For this reason, she is asking for a loan so she can fix her car since it is something that is very necessary for her to get to her customers and make sales. In addition, it is very useful in that it allows her to transport the items that she makes.

At this time, she expresses her thanks to the Fundación Alternativa in Ecuador and to Kiva for allowing her to grow in her work life and her home life.
