A loan of $6,000 helped a member to purchase a 3 wheeled motorcycle wagon.

Muhammed's Group's story

Muhammed is a hard working Iraqi man. He is 34 years old, married and a father of 3 children.

He has 10 years experience selling fruits and vegetables, a business he would like to improve by purchasing his own 3-wheeled motorcycle wagon, which will allow him to pick up and transport his goods without involving others who usually charge a high price for the work. Cutting out the 'middle man' will allow Muhammed to choose and purchase the fresh goods directly from the growers and will give him a better opportunity to sell and improve his income from the business.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
