Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $1,175 helped to buy supplies (fertilizer, fungicide, foliar fertilizers) and to pay for labor.

Rufo's story

San Sebastián de Yali is a municipality located in the northern part of Jinotega department, known for its forest and many species of orchids, with a suitable terrain for agriculture and livestock farming. In a surrounding community known as Guayabas lives Rufo with his wife and four children, for whom he has to provide and educate.

Rufo, who cultivates basic grains, is known as an honest and hardworking person with over 30 years of experience. His property covers an area of 110 manzanas [equivalent to 1.75 acres], all which is suitable for the cultivation of corn and beans and for raising cattle.

He recently visited our offices and is requesting a loan to buy fertilizer, fungicides, and foliar fertilizers, and to pay for labor to help maintain the bean crop in areas where he thinks it will be beneficial. He expects a positive impact for his family, since they work their farm following this routine every year, improving their standard of living and economic conditions with the income earned from each crop.
