A loan of $900 helped to buy organic fertilizer for her crops next season.

Orfelinda's story

Orfelinda is 39 years old and married to Esteban. They have five children together, and they live with two of them in their own home. Orfelinda grows a variety of high-quality vegetables in a garden that she planted near her home. The garden is fertilized with guano from the island, which gives her an abundant and healthy harvest.

Orfelinda is thinking about expanding the area that she farms in the future, in order to increase her income, but for now she limits what she grows to peas, corn, ulluco [a root vegetable] and potatoes. Orfelinda says that because they do not have their own land they have to lease it, and they pay a year at a time to avoid monthly payments. She also raises sheep, which she sells along with her vegetables in the city market. But when she has a larger harvest, she travels to the capital to sell at the higher market price available there.

This is Orfenlinda’s third Kiva loan. She says that her goal is to save money to buy her own land. She will use the 2,5000 PEN to buy organic fertilizer for her planting next season, because it is currently harvest time. Orfelinda promises to make her payments on time.
