A loan of $1,000 helped to buy a replacement mill.

José Celestino's story

José is 34 years old and has a partner. He has two children, a five-year-old and an eight-year-old. Only the older child goes to school. Given the economic conditions when he was a child, José was only able to attend school until the 9th grade. José's life partner is a homemaker, and José supports all three people in their household. José has been working in the mayor's office in his community for three years. He also has a nixtamal [tortilla dough] mill that people pay to use. Carlos' spouse helps him to look after their customers. José will use this loan to buy a replacement for the mill. It needs to be repaired so that it works better, since the mill generates a large part of his income. In the future, José wants to buy another mill, so that he can increase his earnings and meet the demand from his customers. However, what he most desires is for his children to graduate from university and live in better conditions.
