Mariam's story

Mariam, age 42 is from the village of Akhasheni, Kakheti region. She is married and lives with her two grown children and retired mother-in-law. The family earns a living through agriculture. They grow grapes and strawberries seasonally and sell their harvest to fruit retailers. Besides, Mariam takes care the pig with piglets and a horse, which is used for transportation by her husband.

Like a majority of middle-aged Georgian women, Mariam stays home in spite of her high education. She is an excellent mother and housewife who tries to give her children all the best. Mariam sorrows that she is not able to generate income in the family that is why she had decided to start her own business and go to capital city fair market to purchase apparel and linens for resale. She will sell the items from her house among her community members. The increased profit will be reinvested in the same business and Mariam will be able to continue the business.
