Charles's story

Charles is 38 years old, married, and has five children. He earns his income through the sale of crops and livestock and from monthly compensation as a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). Community Knowledge Workers are trusted community members, who provide agricultural data and advice to rural farmers in their local area including information about the weather, market prices, crop diseases, and agricultural tools.

On his land, Charles grows maize, beans, and cassava. He also raises chickens, cattle, and goats. Having served as a CKW for the last two years, Charles looks forward to renewing his CKW contract for the next three years. As a CKW, he will use the materials in his business-in-a-box (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of his village, helping them to improve their crop yields and increase their incomes. With the additional money he will earn as a CKW, Charles will use it to expand his small business. His biggest dream is to build a big commercial house so as to earn extra income.
